How to track a football player’s minutes

A playing-time tracker adds up each spell a player spends on the pitch. The same method works for youth soccer, small-sided football and a full-sized match. Use the duration and substitution rules of your competition; the example below is not an age-group rule.

  1. Write down the starters. Their first interval begins at kickoff. Bench players have no playing minutes until they enter.
  2. Record every entry and exit. Use the match clock, not the time of day. Note both players when one replaces another.
  3. Keep one clock convention. For a 60-minute game in two halves, the second half starts at match minute 30. A substitution 12 minutes into that half is minute 42. Do not count the half-time break.
  4. Close the final interval. For anyone still playing, the exit time is the final whistle.

Minutes played = the sum of (exit minute − entry minute). Include each return to the pitch when rolling substitutions are allowed. If an entry is uncertain, mark it for checking instead of treating an estimate as exact.

Worked example: two spells in a 60-minute match

Alex starts, leaves at minute 18, returns at minute 35 and finishes the match. These are fictional entries to show the calculation.

Alex played 43 minutes, or about 71.7% of this match. That percentage describes participation, not performance. It says nothing by itself about why a coach made a substitution.

For a team check, a 7-a-side match lasting 60 minutes has 420 player-minutes if all seven places remain occupied throughout. Your players’ totals should add up to that. Sending-offs, delayed replacements or an incomplete record change the calculation.

Free playing-time tracking sheet

Start with this blank CSV tracking sheet. Open it in your spreadsheet app, add one row for each spell and calculate Off minus On. It contains column headings and blank rows, not automatic formulas. Keep a copy per match, or print the table below for the touchline.

Use initials or squad numbers when sharing the sheet. A record of children’s participation does not need to become a public player database.

Use SEV7N as your football playing-time tracker

Set the match duration and starting lineup before kickoff. During the match, use the live substitution action to record who leaves and who enters. Check the timeline after the final whistle: an incorrect starter or missing substitution can change the minutes.

SEV7N builds player statistics from the events you record, including appearances, goals, assists and playing time. It does not need a camera, GPS vest or video analysis. You still need someone watching the game and entering the changes.

Choose the same team, season and match set when comparing totals. Archived games stay in History but are excluded from Stats and season exports until unarchived. A missing game, different attendance or missed entry can explain a difference; minutes alone do not establish ability or fair selection.

Common playing-time questions

Does half-time count?

No. Count the player’s time in the match, excluding the interval. Keep the clock convention consistent across both halves.

What if a player comes off and goes back on?

Create another interval. Add all the intervals for that player rather than subtracting only their first entry from their last exit.

Can I use SEV7N for free?

Free includes 3 active game slots and archive storage for 5 games. Premium is €2.49 per month or €19.99 per year. Check the current plans for limits before building a season record.
