What should a football match report include?

A useful grassroots match report answers four questions: who played, what was the score, what happened and what should the team remember? It can be a short message for parents rather than a newspaper-style article.

  1. Match details: your team, the opponent, date and final score. Add the age group or competition to your notes if it helps readers identify the fixture.
  2. Key moments: goals in order, scorers and confirmed assists. Include the opposition’s goals so the sequence explains the final score.
  3. Team observations: a specific positive moment, an improvement to work on or an encouraging example of teamwork.
  4. A clear finish: thank the helpers and add the next fixture only when its details are confirmed.

Example: a youth football match report

This fictional example is for a 60-minute match. Adapt the length and details to your competition.

Riverside U12 3–1 Northside FC Goals and key moments 12' Alex opened the scoring for Riverside. 25' Northside equalised before half-time. 38' Sam put Riverside ahead, assisted by Leo. 54' Alex added Riverside’s third. Match notes Riverside kept looking for a pass after conceding the equaliser. The move for the second goal was a good example of that teamwork. Next session, we can work on finding space for the first pass from the back. Thanks to the players, coaches and parents who helped today.

How to use the free template

Fill in the form above, then choose Build match report. Check the result before copying it into a family message. Print / save PDF opens your browser’s print dialog; choose a PDF destination if your device provides one. To edit in Word or Google Docs, paste the copied text into a document.

The form does not save your work between visits. Copy or print the finished report before closing the page. Match details are processed in your browser; the site’s separate analytics and cookie choices are explained in the privacy policy.

Keep a youth football report accurate and considerate

Use initials or squad numbers if the report will leave your trusted group. Check the club’s sharing arrangements before posting children’s names or photos. Avoid publishing medical details or criticism of individual children. If you are unsure of a scorer or minute, verify it or leave it out.

This is an informal recap template, not an official referee’s report or league submission form. Use your competition’s required forms for those purposes.

Capture the report while the match happens

For the next game, share live grassroots football scores and events with SEV7N. Someone at the pitch records goals, assists and substitutions; invited relatives follow the score and timeline. Shared app access requires an account, unlike this standalone template.

For participation notes, use our playing-time tracking guide and free sheet. Checking the recorded timeline before writing a report is easier than reconstructing every moment from memory.
